Dry Season: December to April

This is the classic high season in San Blas. The northeast trade winds blow reliably, making for excellent sailing conditions. Skies are mostly blue, rainfall is rare and the sea is its most vivid turquoise.

December – February: Peak sailing season

These three months offer the best sailing winds in San Blas. The trade winds are consistent (15–20 knots), making for exciting passages between island groups. The water is at its clearest, and the days are long and sunny.

The downside: this is also the busiest and most expensive period. Book 2–3 months in advance if you want the best boats at the best prices during this window.

March – April: Warm, calm and beautiful

As the dry season progresses, the winds ease and the sea becomes flatter and calmer. March and April are ideal for families with children, snorkelers and anyone who prefers gentler sailing. The water is warm, the crowds start to thin out and availability opens up.

April is our top recommendation for first-time visitors — calm seas, reliable sunshine, less crowded and slightly lower prices than the peak months.

Rainy Season: May to November

The rainy season in San Blas is not what most people imagine. It doesn't rain all day. It rains in short, intense bursts — often in the afternoon or at night — leaving the rest of the day sunny and beautiful. The sea is calmer, the vegetation is lush and you'll share the islands with far fewer people.

May – June: Transition into green season

May marks the start of the rainy season but is actually a lovely time to visit. Seas are very calm, prices drop noticeably and you'll often have entire anchorages to yourself. June is the most uncertain month — it can be wonderful or it can be wet and grey.

July – August: The hidden gem months

These two months are often overlooked but can be excellent. Rainfall is usually limited to afternoon showers, mornings are sunny and the islands are uncrowded. Prices are lower and boats more available. July and August are our secret tip for travellers who want San Blas without the crowds.

September – October: Wettest months

September is the rainiest month and October can also be unpredictable. We operate all year but always brief guests honestly — rainy season sailing in San Blas can still be magical, but you need to be comfortable with the uncertainty. Not recommended for guests who are anxious about weather.

November: Shoulder season

November is a transition month. Weather starts improving, seas calm down and early dry season conditions can arrive by late November. It's a great time to visit — lower prices, improving conditions and the islands starting to fill with life again.
