Two routes, one paradise. Everything you need to know about getting to the San Blas Islands — by land or by air.
San Blas is one of the most inaccessible — and therefore one of the most pristine — destinations in the Caribbean. The Kuna Yala community controls access to the islands, keeping tourism low-impact and the environment protected. Getting there requires a bit of planning, but we make it simple.
You have two options: the classic 4×4 mountain road transfer — an adventure in itself — or a quick domestic flight directly to the islands. Both can be arranged by us as part of your sailing package.
The classic way. A shared or private 4×4 jeep picks you up in Panama City, crosses the mountains through indigenous territory, and drops you at the coast for a short boat ride to your vessel.

Full details & how to book →We coordinate all transport logistics for guests who book with us. Here is the typical journey from Panama City to your San Blas sailing trip.
Departure between 5:30–6:30am from your hotel or agreed meeting point in Panama City. Early start is necessary to arrive before the afternoon winds pick up.
The 4×4 climbs through the Serranía de San Blas mountains. Dramatic scenery, jungle canopy and the occasional Kuna community along the way.
You reach the Caribbean coast at the port of Carti or Miramar, where your captain and a small boat are waiting to take you to the sailing vessel.
You're welcomed on board with breakfast. Your captain briefs you on the journey ahead and you set sail into the archipelago.
There are two ways: by land (a 4×4 jeep over the mountains + short boat transfer, ~2.5 hours) or by air (a 20-min domestic flight with Air Panama). Most guests take the land transfer as it's cheaper and part of the adventure.
The land transfer takes approximately 2.5–3 hours total (1.5h mountain road + boat to vessel). The flight is 20 minutes but with check-in and airport transfers the total time is similar.
Yes, the mountain road is safe with an experienced local driver in a proper 4×4. We work exclusively with trusted drivers who know the route well. The road requires a 4×4 — a regular car cannot make the journey.
Yes. Air Panama operates scheduled flights from Albrook Airport (Panama City) to several San Blas airstrips — including Porvenir, Achutupo and others. Flights are about 20 minutes and offer stunning aerial views of the archipelago.
Flying is faster and more comfortable. The land transfer is cheaper, more adventurous and includes stunning mountain scenery. Most of our guests choose the 4×4 transfer and consider it an integral part of the experience.
